"This is the twentieth draft of the lyrics—I was aiming for something universal so we could stop focusing on the Second Amendment and instead on the horror of the event itself, which is unspeakable. Or should be. We’re forced to do drills to prepare for active assailants now—it infuriates me. I can’t believe we’re OK with this level of normalization.

I don’t think of myself as a political writer—I mostly write about the politics of trying to be a good human being. But sometimes you gotta say something."

Another season of broken glass
Crisp cadence coming from the hall
Bodies slump and pool the floor
Give it time, he’ll get them all

Another season of thoughts and prayers
Names trickle out to the press
Suits express their worthless regret
And the night shift cleans up the mess

Another season of discoveries
Pawing through a bedroom for some clues
